GIF is limited to 256 colors and was designed in 1987 — PNG (designed as its replacement in 1996) supports millions of colors, better compression for most images, and full alpha transparency. Converting GIF to PNG gives you a higher-quality file that's typically smaller for non-photo content. For animated GIFs, this converter exports the first frame only — for animated output, use a GIF-to-WebP or GIF-to-MP4 converter instead. The conversion is computed locally on your device.

Frequently asked questions

Will the GIF animation be preserved?
No — PNG doesn't support animation. This converter exports the first frame as a static PNG. To preserve animation, convert to animated WebP instead.
