What is JPEG XL?

JPEG XL (JXL) is a modern image format released in 2021, designed as a successor to both JPEG and PNG — it's significantly more efficient than either, supports lossless and lossy modes, transparency, HDR, and animation. Native browser support is currently limited (Safari ships it; Chrome and Firefox keep it behind flags), so converting to JPG is often necessary for sharing.
